A working harbour town, not a new estate
Shellharbour is one of the oldest settlements on this coast. A private township was laid out here in 1851 and called Peterborough; the name did not officially become Shellharbour until 1885. The stone watch-house dates to 1861, and blue metal was being shipped out of Bass Point from 1880. Addison Street is still a genuine main street, not a shopping-centre concourse, and it runs down to Little Park, the boat harbour and the Beverley Whitfield Pool — a saltwater pool cut into the rocks in the 1890s, renamed for the local swimmer who raced breaststroke for Australia at the 1972 Munich Olympics. The Roo Theatre Company is on the same street, Harbourside Markets fill Little Park every fourth Sunday, and the surf club has been on the beach since 1936.
That mix shapes what comes through a physiotherapy door here: people who walk the harbour loop every morning and intend to keep doing it, nippers and surf club shoulders, tradespeople who drive north to Port Kembla, hospitality staff on their feet all summer. It is one road for most of it: out of the village on Addison Street, pick up Shellharbour Road and follow it north-west, then Captain Cook Drive into the medical precinct. Allow about 4 minutes outside school pick-up. There is — no circling the way you would on Addison Street in January.
Without a car it still works. The village has no railway station of its own, but local buses run the Shellharbour Road corridor and the nearest stop to the clinic is on Lake Entrance Road, about 150 metres from the door. The complex also holds a GP practice, pathology and radiology.
