It is close to a single road. Lake Entrance Road leaves Oak Flats on the lake side, runs north-east past Mount Warrigal, and Captain Cook Drive comes off it minutes later at Barrack Heights. From the Blackbutt end, most people pick it up off the Princes Highway.
Without a car, Premier Illawarra buses run from the interchange beside Oak Flats railway station towards Warilla and Shellharbour; the nearest stop is on Lake Entrance Road about 150 metres from the door.

A bit about Oak Flats
Oak Flats sits on the south-western shore of Lake Illawarra, and it was a place people came to long before it was a place people lived. The name goes back to an 1821 grazing property, the Oak Flats Run. The suburb began with the Lake Illawarra Township Estate in 1925, its layout attributed to Walter Burley Griffin, who also drew Canberra. In the 1930s Sydney papers sold the lake as a health cure; holidaymakers stayed in a guesthouse on The Boulevarde and hired rowing boats from a shed by the water.
The centre of gravity now is Central Avenue — a real main street with a supermarket, a greengrocer, a patisserie and a row of takeaways, not a mall.
