Who we see from Windang
Windang sits on the tip of the peninsula guarding the ocean entrance to Lake Illawarra — surf on one side, lake on the other, Primbee behind it. The name is an Aboriginal word meaning “scene of a fight”, and the point was an Aboriginal reserve from the 1880s until around 1920, when William Turnbull built Windang House and laid out his Belwarra Estate. Guest houses followed in the 1930s, and the Windang Beach Tourist Park is what that trade became. Prawning, fishing, boating and surfing have been the draw ever since; the lake entrance has been held open by breakwalls since 2007.
That geography shapes the caseload. Much of it is load and awkward footing rather than sport: scooping prawns off a moving boat at night, dragging a tinnie up the ramp, hauling gear over soft sand. Kitesurfers launching into a southerly bring shoulders and knees, Club Windang’s bowlers bring shoulders and hips, and the peninsula’s martial arts gym sends grappling complaints. Windang Public School, K–6 on the lake edge, has been going more than seventy years and supplies the younger end. The rest is work — the Port Kembla industrial area is a short run north.
From Windang to Captain Cook Drive
One route does it. Windang Road runs the length of the peninsula and crosses the entrance on Windang Bridge — opened in 1938, rebuilt as the four-lane crossing in 1972 — then becomes Lake Entrance Road and carries you through Lake Illawarra and Warilla to Captain Cook Drive. About 7 minutes in ordinary traffic, longer on a summer weekend. Buses follow the same corridor, and the nearest stop to us is on Lake Entrance Road about 150 metres from the door.
Worth knowing before you arrive: this is a medical complex, not a shopping centre. A GP practice, pharmacy, dental, pathology and radiology sit alongside us, so imaging your GP wants first can happen on the same trip.
